A key growth area for these retailers is the non-food sector. This represents a serious threat to small independent retailers on the high street, who rely on linked trips and consumers’ ability to compare different goods across a range of stores before deciding on a purchase.
Applications by Tesco to build vast stores with a larger amount of floor space devoted to non- food goods, such as in Stretford2, reveal a worrying trend. When a proposed store is so huge that it cannot be accommodated anywhere else (as is argued by the retailer in Stretford), and the chosen site is out of the centre, it begs the question of what future is there for town centres?
